triage system
A system to assist in the safe triage of general practice patients
The General Practice Triage system
A comprehensive guide for general practices to enable the safe and effective triage of patients seeking care.
background
The General Practice Triage System was developed from the work undertaken by the former Hunter Urban Division of General Practice (HUDGP). After initial funding to produce a paper-based version (that was used in over 1000 practices throughout Australia and accredited by the RACGP), the guide was converted into a web-based tool, before the decision was made to discontinue the hosting of the triage tool. The original HUDGP development was based on the systematic review of a large amount of data from the GP Access After Hours service in the Hunter Region and input from GPs, Practice Nurses, Practice Managers and the Ambulance Service of NSW. This analysis and input resulted in the identification of higher-risk patients contacting and presenting to a general practice. The development also formalised a series of decision support guidelines, to assist practice staff and nurses make safe triage decisions.
The principal developer of the original guide (Simon Gould) has been training and educating in the general practice, triage field for over 19 years and working as a international consultant in setting up triage systems and from experience as the principal developer of the Triage Guide for General Practice.. From this experience and to support the RACGP accreditation requirements for a "triage system" in practices; Medics for Life developed the General Practice Triage System as the next generation of triage resources. The most important use for triage systems is in managing the unpredictable demand of "urgent/ same-day care".
